Lagos lies in the western Algarve, where the south coast begins to feel the open Atlantic. The water is usually a degree or two cooler than in Faro or Albufeira, but still clearly milder than on the west coast, and the sheltered coves around Ponta da Piedade calm the swell.
From August to early October. The Algarve peaks in late summer at around 22 to 24 °C, and September usually beats June comfortably. In winter the water drops to around 15 to 16 °C.
The ocean gains and loses heat far more slowly than land, so it runs months behind the seasons. On top of that, the summer northerly wind pushes surface water offshore and draws cold deep water up in its place, which is why a heatwave on land so often coincides with a colder sea.
