Sea temperature moves much more slowly than air temperature. A hot afternoon does not warm the ocean, and a windy day can cool it fast. Checking the water itself is the only reliable way to know what to expect.
Armação de Pêra has one of the longest continuous sands in the Algarve, facing due south with the sea caves and Senhora da Rocha at its western end. The orientation shields it from the northerly wind, and the wide shallow approach helps the water warm through the summer to around 18 °C. Fishing boats still pull up on the sand at the town end, which keeps that stretch busier than the open kilometres to the east.
The water is warmest in October, averaging 18.5 °C, and coldest in March at 15.5 °C. The Algarve peaks in late summer, well after the hottest weather on land, and September usually beats June comfortably.
The ocean gains and loses heat far more slowly than land, so it runs months behind the seasons. On top of that, the summer northerly wind pushes surface water offshore and draws cold deep water up in its place, which is why a heatwave on land so often coincides with a colder sea.
There is enough sand here to walk for an hour and still be on the same beach, with calm south-facing water for swimming most of the summer. Boats run west along the cliffs to Senhora da Rocha and the sea caves, and paddleboards and kayaks work the quieter stretches. Fishing boats still land their catch on the sand at the town end.
