Ponta Delgada, on the south coast of São Miguel in the Azores, is washed by the Gulf Stream. The ocean around the islands is steadier than along the mainland, without upwelling shocks, and late summer often brings surprisingly pleasant water for the middle of the Atlantic.
The water is warmest in August, averaging 24.3 °C, and coldest in March at 16.4 °C. The Gulf Stream keeps the Azores mild for the latitude, without the upwelling shocks of the mainland.
The ocean gains and loses heat far more slowly than land, so it runs months behind the seasons. On top of that, the summer northerly wind pushes surface water offshore and draws cold deep water up in its place, which is why a heatwave on land so often coincides with a colder sea.
Ponta Delgada is one of Europe's whale-watching capitals, with sperm whales sighted all year round. Add diving and snorkelling in clear Atlantic water, sailing, and surprisingly pleasant late-summer swims.
