Sea temperature moves much more slowly than air temperature. A hot afternoon does not warm the ocean, and a windy day can cool it fast. Checking the water itself is the only reliable way to know what to expect.
Praia de Mira lies on the Aveiro coast, with the Barrinha lagoon behind the dunes and the traditional striped palheiros lining the front. The beach faces west into the open Atlantic and has no headland or bay to shelter it, so the sea stays fresh at around 17 °C in August. The lagoon behind is a different world, still and shallow, and it warms far beyond anything the ocean does.
The water is warmest in October, averaging 18.3 °C, and coldest in February at 14.5 °C. On the west coast the peak arrives late, in early autumn, because summer upwelling keeps pulling cold deep water to the surface.
The ocean gains and loses heat far more slowly than land, so it runs months behind the seasons. On top of that, the summer northerly wind pushes surface water offshore and draws cold deep water up in its place, which is why a heatwave on land so often coincides with a colder sea.
The ocean beach gives surf and long walks along the dunes, and the arte xávega crews still haul their nets in on the sand at the fishing end. Behind the dunes, the Barrinha lagoon is calm, warm and made for kayaking, paddleboarding and small-boat sailing. The striped palheiros along the front are the reason many people stop here in the first place.
