Praia de Mira is a beach village in the Aveiro district, known for its palheiros, the tall wooden houses on stilts painted in stripes that once stored fishing gear. The Barrinha lagoon lies just behind the dunes, so there is calm water on one side and open ocean on the other. The arte xávega tradition survives here, with boats hauling long seine nets in from the sand.
Summers are moderate at 22–25 °C, with sea fog possible in the morning and a reliable northerly wind in the afternoon. Winter is mild at 13–15 °C with regular rain. The Atlantic here is cold, around 15–17 °C through the summer, while the shallow lagoon water behind the dunes warms considerably more on a sunny day.

In late August and September, when the ocean reaches about 16–18 °C. Upwelling on this coast is strong and persistent, so the sea stays cool right through the hottest weeks. The Barrinha lagoon behind the dunes is the warmer option for a swim.
They are the traditional striped houses raised on wooden stilts that line the older part of the village, built to keep boats and fishing gear clear of blown sand and high water. Several survive along the canal and near the beach. They are the reason Praia de Mira looks unlike any other beach town on this coast.
It is beach-seine fishing, where a boat runs a long net out from the shore in an arc and the net is then hauled back onto the sand, once by oxen and now by tractor. It still happens here in season, usually early in the morning, and the catch is sold on the beach.
