Esposende stands at the mouth of the Cávado river inside the Litoral Norte Natural Park, with dunes running north along the coast and the Ofir pine forest on the far bank. The estuary and the dune system are protected, so building stops well short of the sand. Reliable wind has made it one of the north's kitesurfing bases.

Summers are cool and breezy at 20–24 °C, with the northerly building every afternoon. Winter is mild at 13–15 °C with regular Atlantic rain. The ocean is cold here, about 15–17 °C in summer under strong upwelling, while the shallow water in the Cávado estuary warms faster on a sunny day and is calmer for children.

Is Esposende good for kitesurfing?

It is one of the more reliable spots in the north. The summer northerly blows almost daily through the afternoon, and there is space both on the open beach and around the river mouth. Schools operate in season. A full wetsuit is needed all year in this water.

What is there to do besides the beach?

Walk the boardwalks through the protected dunes of the Litoral Norte park, cross to the Ofir pine forest on the south bank, or follow the river inland. Birdlife in the estuary is good, particularly outside summer. The coastal path north towards Viana do Castelo makes an easy day of walking.
