Tróia is the tip of a long sand peninsula across the Sado estuary from Setúbal, reached in about twenty minutes by ferry. The Roman fish-salting ruins near the point are among the largest known anywhere, and a resident group of bottlenose dolphins lives in the estuary. The peninsula has two shores: a calm estuary side facing Setúbal and the Arrábida hills, and a long open ocean beach on the other.

Summers are warm and dry at 26–29 °C, with a sea breeze most afternoons. Winter is mild at 15–16 °C, with the rain arriving between November and February. The estuary side is shallow and sheltered, so it warms well and is usually flat, reaching about 17–18 °C in late summer, while the ocean side stays a couple of degrees cooler at 17–19 °C.

When is the sea warmest in Tróia?

Late August and September. The estuary side reaches around 19–21 °C by then, a couple of degrees above the ocean beach on the other shore of the peninsula. The estuary also warms earlier in the season, which makes it the better choice in June.

How do you get to Tróia?

By ferry from Setúbal, which takes about twenty minutes and carries both cars and foot passengers, running through the day and late into the evening in summer. By road it is a long way round through Alcácer do Sal. In high season the car ferry queues, so foot passengers have the easier crossing.

Can you see dolphins at Tróia?

A group of bottlenose dolphins lives in the Sado estuary year round, and boat trips run from Setúbal and Tróia to look for them. Sightings are common but never guaranteed, and morning trips in calm weather give the best odds. They are sometimes visible from the ferry itself.
