Praia da Vitória is on the east coast of Terceira and has something rare in the Azores: a long bay of sand. Most shores in the archipelago are black volcanic rock, so this beach is a genuine attraction and fills with islanders in summer. A marina breakwater shelters the bay, which keeps the water inside it calm even when the ocean outside is not.
The Azorean climate is mild and changeable, with summer afternoons around 24–26 °C and winter days near 16–17 °C, and cloud and showers can pass through in any month. The ocean around the islands is steady rather than dramatic, without the upwelling that chills the mainland, and it runs roughly 17–23 °C over the course of the year.
