Peniche sits on a rocky peninsula that was once an island, with the sea on almost every side and the Berlengas archipelago about ten kilometres offshore. That geography opens it to swell from several directions, and at Supertubos breaks one of Europe's best beach-break waves, a regular stop on the world surfing tour.

The climate is cool and maritime even for the west coast: summers of 20–24 °C, wind working its way around the peninsula most days, and fog that sometimes clings to the shore on an August morning. Winter is mild at 13–15 °C with rain in spells. The water rarely leaves the 15–18 °C band, and wetsuits are part of the scenery all year round.

When is the sea warmest in Peniche?

In September and October, when the water reaches 17–19 °C. It is always a fresh sea: the west-coast upwelling gives no truce, and even in August there are days when the water surprises with its chill.

Why is Peniche called the wave capital?

Because the peninsula works like a swell magnet: with coastline facing north, west and south, there is nearly always one beach with working waves and another sheltered from the wind. Supertubos, on the south side, produces sand-bottom barrels with a worldwide reputation.

Can you visit the Berlengas?

Yes, by boat from Peniche harbour, mainly between May and September. The nature reserve caps the number of daily visitors, and the water around the archipelago is among the clearest on the Portuguese coast.
