Peniche sits on a rocky peninsula that was once an island, with the sea on almost every side and the Berlengas archipelago about ten kilometres offshore. That geography opens it to swell from several directions, and at Supertubos breaks one of Europe's best beach-break waves, a regular stop on the world surfing tour.
The climate is cool and maritime even for the west coast: summers of 20–24 °C, wind working its way around the peninsula most days, and fog that sometimes clings to the shore on an August morning.
