Alvor is a fishing village between Portimão and Lagos, set on the lagoon of the Ria de Alvor with narrow lanes running down to the quay. A long wooden boardwalk crosses the dunes and the salt marsh to reach the beach, and the sand continues east towards Três Irmãos and its rock stacks. Boats still work the estuary, and the village keeps a quieter feel than its bigger neighbours.

Summer afternoons run to 28–30 °C with almost no rain, and the sea breeze takes the edge off the heat down by the water. Winter is mild at 16–17 °C, sunny between Atlantic fronts. The estuary is shallow and sheltered, so the water there warms quickly and feels several degrees kinder than the open coast, while the ocean beach settles at about 17–18 °C in late summer.

When is the sea warmest in Alvor?

August to early October, when the ocean side reaches 17–18 °C. The shallow water inside the Ria de Alvor warms faster still on a sunny day, especially on a rising tide flooding over sand flats that have been baking since morning.

Is Alvor good for families?

It suits them well. The beach is long and wide, so it rarely feels crowded, the shelving is gentle, and the lagoon side gives calm shallow water when the ocean is choppy. The boardwalk is easy with a pushchair, though it is a fair distance from the village to the sand in the midday heat.

What is there to do besides the beach?

Walk the boardwalk across the Ria de Alvor for the birdlife, take a boat from the quay along the coast to the caves, or paddle a kayak in the sheltered estuary channels. The village itself is a short, flat stroll of fish restaurants and small bars.
