Odeceixe sits on the border between the Alentejo and the Algarve, where the Seixe river cuts through the cliffs and opens into a half-moon of sand. The village is a couple of kilometres inland on a hillside, and the beach lies at the end of the valley road. Two waters meet on the same beach: calm river on one side, open Atlantic on the other.
Summer afternoons sit at 25–28 °C, with the usual northerly picking up after lunch and a sheltered valley that traps the warmth. Winter is mild at 15–16 °C with Atlantic rain. The ocean side is exposed and cool at about 16–18 °C in summer, held down by upwelling, while the shallow river channel behind the sandbar warms in the sun and is the obvious choice for children.

It is one of the better-known beach breaks on this coast, working across a range of swells and busy with schools and surf camps in summer. The sandbanks shift with the river, so the peaks move through the year. The water is cool, so bring a wetsuit whatever the month.
The river for calm, shallow, warmer water and for young children, the sea for waves and space. They are a few steps apart on the same beach, so families often set up in between. Be aware that the river channel runs faster on an ebbing tide.
