Póvoa de Varzim is a fishing city north of Porto with a busy working port, a casino and a long city beach running straight out from the promenade. The fishing tradition is still visible in the harbour and on the plate: seafood is what the town is known for, and it takes it seriously. Vila do Conde is next door, close enough to walk along the sand.
Summers are cool and breezy at 20–24 °C, with the northerly wind blowing most afternoons and grey mornings that usually burn off. Winter is mild at 13–15 °C with steady Atlantic rain. The sea is cold, around 15–17 °C in summer, and this coast has some of the strongest upwelling in Portugal, so the water rarely warms much whatever the air does.

Fishing and seafood above all, with one of the busier ports on the north coast, plus a casino and a broad city beach right in front of the town. It is a genuine year-round city rather than a seasonal resort, which means restaurants and shops stay open well outside summer.
The metro runs from Porto to Póvoa de Varzim in about an hour and ends near the seafront, which makes it a straightforward day trip. The same line stops at Vila do Conde a few minutes earlier. By car it is roughly forty minutes on the motorway.
