Guincho is the wild beach north of Cascais, inside the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, with dunes behind it and the Serra de Sintra rising in the background. It has been a windsurfing and kitesurfing venue for decades and has hosted World Cup events. Nothing is built on the sand, and the setting of dune, pine and rock is the whole point.

Summer afternoons here are cooler than in Lisbon, usually 22–25 °C, because the wind blows almost every day and often hard. Winter is mild at 14–15 °C, with the biggest Atlantic swells of the year. The water is cold by any standard, around 15–17 °C through summer, and the currents and shorebreak are serious enough that swimming needs care and lifeguard supervision.

Going by Guincho's own averages, August is both the warmest and the most balanced month: highs near 23 °C and about 2 rainy days. The wettest is April with 12 rainy days.

Averages for 2016–2025. A rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of precipitation.

When is the sea warmest at Guincho?

In September and early October, when it may reach 17–18 °C. Guincho sits at the cold end of the Portuguese coast because it is fully exposed and the summer wind drives constant upwelling. A wetsuit is standard here in every month.

Why is Guincho so windy?

The summer northerly, the nortada, funnels down this stretch of coast and accelerates around the headland, so strong wind is the normal afternoon state from May to September. That is exactly what made it a windsurf and kitesurf venue. For a calm beach day, come in the morning or go elsewhere.

Is Guincho safe for swimming?

Treat it with respect. There is powerful shorebreak, rip currents and cold water, and the sea builds through the day with the wind. Swim only where the lifeguards are and only when the flags allow it. Families usually prefer the sheltered bay beaches in Cascais and save Guincho for the walk and the view.
