Porto's weather is Atlantic through and through: milder summers than the south, noticeably more rain, and lush green surroundings to show for it. Summer afternoons typically reach 24–26 °C, kept fresh by the nortada breeze and the cool ocean, and it's common to see morning mist over the Douro even in August. It usually burns off before lunch.
Winters are wet rather than cold. Daytime highs stay around 13–15 °C and frost is rare near the coast, but the city collects well over 1,000 mm of rain a year, most of it between October and January. From May to September long sunny spells are the norm. Just pack a light layer for the evenings, because the Atlantic makes Porto's nights cooler than its summer days suggest.

Porto sits further north, directly in the path of Atlantic frontal systems, and the hills of the Minho region help wring moisture out of the incoming air. The result is one of the wettest big-city climates in Iberia, and the greenest scenery.
