Arrifana is a west-facing bay in the Aljezur municipality, set under high cliffs with a small fishing harbour tucked into one corner. The village above is little more than a scatter of houses and restaurants along the clifftop, with a steep road down to the sand. It is one of the best-known surf spots on the Vicentina coast, and that is why most people come.

Summers are warm rather than hot, usually 24–27 °C, with a northerly wind through the afternoon and cliffs that shade the beach late in the day. Winter is mild at 15–16 °C with Atlantic rain. The bay faces the open ocean, so the swell is consistent and upwelling keeps the water around 16–18 °C in summer, rising a little in early autumn.

When is the sea warmest in Arrifana?

In September, at roughly 17–19 °C, once the summer northerly loses its grip. This is cool Atlantic water all year, so plan on a wetsuit if you are staying in for longer than a quick swim.

Why is Arrifana a good surf spot?

The bay faces northwest and the headland gives it some shelter, so it holds a rideable wave when the rest of the coast is blown out. Swell arrives year round, and there is a right-hand point at the north end for more experienced surfers. Several schools work the beach in summer.

Is Arrifana suitable for a family beach day?

It can be, on a small swell and in the morning. The bay is sheltered at the harbour end, but the beach picks up shorebreak and currents when the ocean is up, so watch the flags. The access road is steep and the parking above fills early in August.
