Lisbon has one of the mildest climates of any European capital, shaped by the Atlantic and the wide Tagus estuary. Summers are hot, dry and reliably sunny, with close to 2,800 hours of sunshine a year, and afternoons are usually tempered by a fresh north-westerly breeze rolling in off the ocean. Heat spells above 35 °C do happen, but they rarely last more than a few days.

Winters are short and gentle: daytime highs hover around 15 °C, frost is almost unheard of in the city centre, and snow is a once-in-a-generation curiosity. Most of the year's rain falls between November and February in bursts of Atlantic fronts, typically followed by clear, washed-out blue skies. Spring and autumn are long and mild, which makes April to June and September to October ideal months for exploring the city on foot.

Between November and February. Rain usually arrives in short, intense Atlantic fronts rather than long grey weeks, and the summer months are close to bone-dry.

How hot does Lisbon get in summer?

Typical July and August afternoons reach 28–30 °C. A few times each summer, hot air from inland Iberia or North Africa pushes temperatures past 35 °C for a couple of days.

Does it ever snow in Lisbon?

Practically never. A few flakes fall roughly once in a generation. The Atlantic keeps winter nights mild, and even frost is rare in the city itself.
