Portimão faces the sea in the western Algarve, at the mouth of the Arade river, with Praia da Rocha stretched below ochre cliffs. The climate is the Algarve at full strength: dry summers at 28–30 °C softened by the sea breeze, clear skies from May to October, and the Monchique hills to the north blocking much of the cooler, damper air that reaches the rest of the country.
Winter is short and mild, with highs of 16–17 °C and plenty of clear days, and most of the year's modest rain falls between November and February. The sea keeps to the ocean's calendar: fresh in early summer, it reaches 17–18 °C by late August and September, when Praia da Rocha is at its best and far less crowded.
