Tavira sits in the eastern Algarve, the warmest and driest corner of mainland Portugal, with the Gilão river running through town and the Ria Formosa lagoon between the houses and the ocean. The beaches are out on Ilha de Tavira, a sand island several kilometres long, and the shallow water over the lagoon's sandbanks warms more than on any other coast in the country.

Summer is long, hot and virtually rain-free, with afternoons of 29–31 °C and mild nights, and the northerly wind that sweeps the west coast rarely arrives here with any force. Winter brings highs of 16–17 °C and plenty of sun, with rain squeezed into short spells between November and February. By late summer the sea reaches 20–21 °C, the highest on the mainland.

How do you get to Tavira's beaches?

By boat. Ferries leave from the town centre and from Quatro Águas for Ilha de Tavira, and the crossing takes just a few minutes. On the ocean side, kilometres of sand wait with calm, clear water.

It is one of the calmest corners of the Portuguese coast. The summer northerly loses its strength before reaching the eastern Algarve, and the sea by the barrier islands is usually quiet. The levante, blowing from the east, occasionally brings hotter, drier days.
