Vila Praia de Âncora lies between Viana do Castelo and Caminha, a small seaside town built around a fishing harbour with a blue-flag beach beside it. The Barrosa dolmen, a megalithic tomb, stands a short way inland. The bay curves enough to take the edge off the swell, which makes it calmer than most of the north coast.

Summers are moderate at 20–24 °C, with the northerly wind in the afternoon and mornings that often start cloudy. Winter is mild at 13–15 °C with plenty of Atlantic rain. The water is cold, about 15–17 °C in summer, but the shelter of the bay and the harbour wall keeps it flatter here than at the open beaches either side.

When is the sea warmest in Vila Praia de Âncora?

In August and September, when it reaches around 16–18 °C. The Minho coast has the coldest water in the country, held down by summer upwelling, so the sea here is refreshing rather than warm even in a heatwave.

Is it good for families?

It is one of the better options in the north. The bay is partly sheltered by the harbour wall, so the waves are smaller than on the open coast, the sand is clean and the town sits right behind the beach with cafés and toilets. Lifeguards work the beach in season.

What is there to see nearby?

The Barrosa dolmen sits a short distance inland and is one of the better-preserved megalithic tombs on this coast. Caminha and the Minho river mouth are ten minutes north, and Viana do Castelo is twenty minutes south, so the town works well as a quieter base for both.
