Costa da Caparica is Lisbon's beach: across the Tagus, fifteen kilometres of unbroken west-facing sand run from the centre to the dunes of Fonte da Telha, with the protected fossil cliff following behind. On summer days half the city crosses the bridge to settle among dozens of named beaches, each with its own beach bar.

The climate belongs to the south bank: sunny summers at 25–28 °C, a northerly wind rising mid-afternoon, and Atlantic water that upwelling holds at 16–19 °C. Autumn often stretches into October with the sea at its yearly peak, and winter is mild at 14–15 °C with rain in short spells.

In late summer and early autumn, when the water reaches 18–19 °C. It is always a fresh sea: on days of strong northerly wind, upwelling can cool it several degrees from one day to the next.

Is Caparica good for learning to surf?

Among the best places in the country to start. The beach-break waves come in at a manageable size most days, schools line the whole stretch of sand, and the north end, more protected by the groyne, usually has the smallest sea.

How do you avoid the wind at Caparica?

Go in the morning. The summer northerly typically picks up from midday and blows into the evening, so the early hours have the calmest sand and the smoothest sea.
