Praia Grande is a wide beach under tall cliffs on the Sintra coast, the biggest stretch of sand between Cascais and Ericeira. Dinosaur footprints are preserved in the cliff face at the northern end, tilted almost upright by the movement of the rock long after the tracks were made. A large seawater pool sits at the southern end, filled from the ocean and a reliable option when the sea itself is too rough.

Summers are cool for Portugal at 22–25 °C, with sea fog that can sit on this coast in the morning and a northerly breeze most afternoons. Winter is mild at 14–15 °C, and the swell is at its biggest then. The sea is open Atlantic and upwelling keeps it at about 16–18 °C in summer, with a shorebreak heavy enough that the beach has hosted bodyboard competitions.

Going by Praia Grande's own averages, August is both the warmest and the most balanced month: highs near 23 °C and about 2 rainy days. The wettest is April with 12 rainy days.

When is the sea warmest at Praia Grande?

September and October, at around 17–19 °C, once the summer wind eases. It never becomes a warm sea here, and most people in the water for any length of time wear a wetsuit. The seawater pool is a few degrees kinder on a sunny day.

Where are the dinosaur footprints?

They are in the cliff at the north end of the beach, on a rock face that was tilted upright long after the tracks were left, so the prints run up the wall rather than along the ground. There is a viewpoint on the road above the beach. Binoculars help, as they are easier to make out from a distance than close up.

Is Praia Grande good for families?

The sand is wide and there is plenty of room, but the shorebreak here is heavy and catches people out, so young children are safer in the seawater pool at the south end. Lifeguards work the beach in season. Bodyboarders and surfers get the best of it, especially in the morning before the wind.
