Carvoeiro is a small cove in the Lagoa municipality, a fishing beach hemmed in by ochre cliffs with whitewashed houses stacked up behind it. The clifftop walk east leads to the Algar Seco rock formations, and boats leave the beach all summer for the sea caves along the coast, including Benagil. It is a compact, easygoing place that has long been a favourite with British and German visitors.

Summers are hot and reliably dry at 28–30 °C, with the cliffs holding the heat into the evening. Winter is mild at 16–17 °C, and most of the year's rain falls between November and February. Facing south and tucked into its cove, Carvoeiro is well sheltered from the northerly wind, so the sea is calm and clear and reaches 17–18 °C by late summer.

When is the sea warmest in Carvoeiro?

From August to early October, when the water reaches 17–18 °C. The Algarve peaks late, so September usually gives warmer swimming than June, with fewer people on the sand. Winter lows are around 15–16 °C.

How do you visit the Benagil cave from Carvoeiro?

Boats leave from the beach and from the nearby marinas through the summer, and the trip along the cliffs takes in Algar Seco and several other caves on the way. Kayak and paddleboard tours run too and get closer in on calm days. Trips are cancelled when the swell is up, so a morning departure is the safer booking.

Is the beach at Carvoeiro busy?

The cove is small, and in July and August it fills by mid-morning. Arrive early or come after five, when the light on the cliffs is at its best and the sand empties out. Outside high summer there is plenty of room, and the clifftop paths are the better way to see this coast anyway.
