Vila do Conde sits at the mouth of the Ave river, a historic shipbuilding town where the Santa Clara convent stands above the water with a long aqueduct running inland from it. The lace-making tradition is still taught and sold in the town. The beaches begin just north of the river and stretch away up the coast.

Summers are moderate at 20–24 °C, with the afternoon northerly and mornings that often begin under low cloud. Winter is mild at 13–15 °C with plenty of rain. The beaches face straight into the Atlantic, and upwelling on this coast keeps the water at about 15–17 °C through the summer, with the river mouth adding current on the ebb tide.

When is the sea warmest in Vila do Conde?

August and September, when the water reaches roughly 16–18 °C. The north coast is the coldest in the country because upwelling here is the most persistent, so the sea barely follows the summer heat on land.

What is Vila do Conde known for?

Shipbuilding, lace and the Santa Clara convent with its aqueduct running away from the town. The historic centre sits on the river and the beaches begin just north of the mouth, so the two combine easily into a single day.

Are the beaches good for families?

The sands north of the river are wide with plenty of space, but this is an open Atlantic coast with waves, wind and cold water, so stick to the lifeguarded stretches. On windy afternoons there is more shelter in town than on the beach. Mornings are usually the calmer half of the day.
