Sesimbra spills down a south-facing slope to the sea in an amphitheatre, with the Serra da Arrábida closing it off behind like a screen. That limestone wall creates the microclimate: the northerly wind passes overhead, the sea out front stays unusually calm and clear, and summer afternoons at 26–29 °C feel more Mediterranean than Atlantic.

The town remains a serious fishing port, with fish landing at the market every day, and the Ouro and Califórnia beaches stretch along the bay right in front of the houses. Winter is mild at 15–16 °C, with rain concentrated between November and February. By late summer the water reaches 17–18 °C, a luxury little more than half an hour from Lisbon.

When is the sea warmest in Sesimbra?

From August to early October, with the water at 17–18 °C. Sheltered from the northerly wind by the Arrábida, this coast warms far more than the exposed beaches of the west coast, and the calm bay keeps the temperature steady.

Why is the water in Sesimbra so calm and clear?

The bay faces south, with its back to the prevailing north wind and sheltered from the northwest swell that pounds the west coast. The limestone Arrábida shore helps, with little sand in suspension, and the result is clear water rare at this Atlantic latitude.

Is Sesimbra good for diving and snorkelling?

Among the best near Lisbon. The Arrábida coast beside the town is part of the Professor Luiz Saldanha Marine Park, and the calm, clear water makes the bottom easy to see even without a tank, especially from July to October.
