Sea temperature moves much more slowly than air temperature. A hot afternoon does not warm the ocean, and a windy day can cool it fast. Checking the water itself is the only reliable way to know what to expect.
Sesimbra faces due south, wedged between the Serra da Arrábida and the sea. Sheltered from the northerly wind, it has unusually calm, clear water for the Portuguese coast, and by late summer it is clearly warmer than the exposed beaches of the west coast.
The water is warmest in October, averaging 18.3 °C, and coldest in March at 15.0 °C. Sheltered from the northerly wind by the Serra da Arrábida, this coast warms more than the exposed west and holds its warmth into early autumn.
The ocean gains and loses heat far more slowly than land, so it runs months behind the seasons. On top of that, the summer northerly wind pushes surface water offshore and draws cold deep water up in its place, which is why a heatwave on land so often coincides with a colder sea.
Diving and snorkelling in the Luiz Saldanha Marine Park, kayaking along the Arrábida cliffs to the Ribeira do Cavalo beach, and calm swimming in the bay. Fishing and sightseeing boats leave the harbour too.
