Sea temperature moves much more slowly than air temperature. A hot afternoon does not warm the ocean, and a windy day can cool it fast. Checking the water itself is the only reliable way to know what to expect.
Figueira da Foz stands at the mouth of the Mondego, with one of the widest urban beaches in Europe and a long walk across sand before you reach the water. The river outflow and the shallow, gently sloping shore both help the sea warm, and it reaches about 18 °C in August, high for this part of the coast. The trade-off is wind: the afternoon northerly funnels along the beach, and the Cabedelo break on the south bank picks up the swell.
The water is warmest in October, averaging 18.5 °C, and coldest in March at 14.7 °C. On the west coast the peak arrives late, in early autumn, because summer upwelling keeps pulling cold deep water to the surface.
The ocean gains and loses heat far more slowly than land, so it runs months behind the seasons. On top of that, the summer northerly wind pushes surface water offshore and draws cold deep water up in its place, which is why a heatwave on land so often coincides with a colder sea.
The Cabedelo break on the south bank of the Mondego is one of the best-known left-handers in the country and keeps the surf schools busy. On the town side there is an enormous expanse of sand for walking, volleyball and kite flying, plus the long paddle out to the water itself. The river adds sailing and rowing on sheltered water away from the wind.
