Sea temperature moves much more slowly than air temperature. A hot afternoon does not warm the ocean, and a windy day can cool it fast. Checking the water itself is the only reliable way to know what to expect.
Carvoeiro is a small cove beach in the Lagoa municipality, framed by ochre cliffs that shelter it from almost every direction. That enclosure keeps the swell down and the surface calm, though the sea itself is open Algarve water at about 17.5 °C in August. Because the cove is narrow and deep-set, the sun leaves it earlier in the day than the long open beaches nearby.
The water is warmest in October, averaging 18.5 °C, and coldest in March at 15.6 °C. The Algarve peaks in late summer, well after the hottest weather on land, and September usually beats June comfortably.
The ocean gains and loses heat far more slowly than land, so it runs months behind the seasons. On top of that, the summer northerly wind pushes surface water offshore and draws cold deep water up in its place, which is why a heatwave on land so often coincides with a colder sea.
Boat trips to the Benagil cave and the neighbouring grottoes leave from the beach itself, and kayak and paddleboard tours cover the same cliffs at a slower pace. The cove is sheltered enough for snorkelling around its edges, and the clifftop boardwalk to the Algar Seco rock formations is the classic walk. In August the small sand fills up early, so mornings are the calmer bet.
