Sea temperature moves much more slowly than air temperature. A hot afternoon does not warm the ocean, and a windy day can cool it fast. Checking the water itself is the only reliable way to know what to expect.
Alvor sits between Portimão and Lagos, where the Ria de Alvor lagoon opens to the sea behind a line of dunes. The lagoon side is shallow and sheltered, so it warms quickly and drops away just as fast, while the ocean sand at Praia de Alvor and Três Irmãos holds steadier water near 17 °C in August. The contrast between the two is the whole point of the place: calm and mild inside, properly Atlantic outside.
The water is warmest in October, averaging 18.4 °C, and coldest in March at 15.6 °C. The Algarve peaks in late summer, well after the hottest weather on land, and September usually beats June comfortably.
The ocean gains and loses heat far more slowly than land, so it runs months behind the seasons. On top of that, the summer northerly wind pushes surface water offshore and draws cold deep water up in its place, which is why a heatwave on land so often coincides with a colder sea.
The boardwalk across the dunes leads to the long sand at Praia de Alvor and Três Irmãos, with easy swimming when the swell is down. Behind it, the Ria de Alvor lagoon is made for kayaking, paddleboarding and birdwatching in shallow, still water. Boats leave the fishing harbour for the coastal caves and for dolphin trips out toward Lagos.
