Sea temperature moves much more slowly than air temperature. A hot afternoon does not warm the ocean, and a windy day can cool it fast. Checking the water itself is the only reliable way to know what to expect.
Espinho sits just south of Porto, a grid-plan town with a seafront promenade running the length of a long, open west-facing beach. There is no bay or breakwater to soften the swell, so the surf breaks work all year and the wind rarely lets up. Upwelling is strong on this coast, though Espinho sits at the southern end of it, and the water reaches about 17.5 °C in August before dropping toward 14 °C in winter.
The water is warmest in October, averaging 18.3 °C, and coldest in January at 13.9 °C. This is Portugal's coldest water: upwelling is at its most persistent here and holds the warming back even at the height of summer.
The ocean gains and loses heat far more slowly than land, so it runs months behind the seasons. On top of that, the summer northerly wind pushes surface water offshore and draws cold deep water up in its place, which is why a heatwave on land so often coincides with a colder sea.
Surfing works all year on the breaks along the seafront, with schools running lessons through the summer and wetsuits standard whatever the month. The promenade gives a long flat walk or cycle beside the sea, the arte xávega crews still fish from the sand, and the Friday market takes over the town. Swimming is bracing but perfectly doable on calm days.
