Espinho is a compact town just south of Porto, laid out on a strict grid where the streets are numbered rather than named. It has a casino, a long seafront promenade, a big market every Friday and surf breaks straight off the sand. The arte xávega beach-seine boats still work the southern end, which keeps a fishing town under the resort.

Summers are moderate at 20–24 °C, often starting grey and clearing by the afternoon, with the northerly wind up after lunch. Winter is mild at 13–15 °C with plenty of Atlantic rain. The sea is among the coldest in the country, held at about 15–17 °C right through summer by the upwelling that dominates this coast.

When is the sea warmest in Espinho?

In August and September, when it may touch 16–18 °C. Espinho sits on the coldest stretch of the Portuguese mainland, where upwelling runs all summer, so the water barely responds to hot weather on land. Wetsuits are worn here in every month.

What is Espinho known for?

Its Friday market, one of the largest in the north, its casino and its seafront. It is also a surf town, with reliable beach breaks along the promenade and a long competition history. The arte xávega boats still haul their nets onto the sand at the southern end.

How do you get to Espinho from Porto?

By suburban train from Porto São Bento or Campanhã, which takes around half an hour and runs frequently. The station is in the centre of town, a few minutes from the beach. Driving takes a similar time outside rush hour.
