Vila Nova de Milfontes stands where the Mira river meets the Atlantic, inside the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentina Coast Natural Park. It is one of the classic Portuguese summer destinations, packed with domestic holidaymakers in August and quiet the rest of the year. The river beaches, Franquia above all, are calm and sheltered, while the ocean beaches out by the Farol are open to the full swell.
Summer afternoons usually reach 25–28 °C, with a northerly wind that builds after lunch and drops again in the evening. Winter is mild at 15–16 °C, with rain in Atlantic spells. This is west-facing coast, so upwelling keeps the ocean cool through the summer at around 16–18 °C, while the shallow river water behind the sandbar can feel several degrees warmer.
