Sintra has the most famous microclimate in Portugal. Its granite ridge rises to about 500 m directly in the path of humid Atlantic air, forcing it upward until it condenses into the fog and drizzle that can wrap the hilltop palaces while Lisbon, less than 30 km away, sits in full sun. The historic centre under the ridge is cooler, damper and greener than the capital all year round.

Summer afternoons typically stay around 24–26 °C, several degrees below Lisbon, and the northerly breeze plus low cloud can make an August evening feel like early autumn. Winters are mild but noticeably wetter than in Lisbon, because the same ridge squeezes extra rain out of every passing front.

Why is Sintra foggy when Lisbon is sunny?

Moist Atlantic air is forced to rise over the Sintra ridge, cools as it climbs, and condenses into low cloud around the summits. Lisbon sits on lower ground away from the ridge, so the same air passes over it without forming fog.

Is Sintra colder than Lisbon?

A few degrees, and the gap is largest on summer afternoons, when Sintra often sits under cloud at 24–26 °C while Lisbon bakes. It is also more humid, so winter days can feel cooler than the thermometer suggests.

When are the views from the palaces clearest?

Fog is most common in the morning and often burns off around midday, so afternoons are the safer bet. Clear, crisp days are most frequent in early autumn and on winter days between fronts.
