Faro sits in the driest, sunniest corner of mainland Portugal. The Algarve coast records around 3,000 hours of sunshine a year, summer rain is essentially zero, and the sheltering hills to the north block much of the cooler, wetter weather that reaches the rest of the country. Summer afternoons are hot but rarely extreme, softened by a dependable sea breeze off the Atlantic and the Ria Formosa lagoon.

Winter is the mildest on the Portuguese mainland: sunny days around 16–17 °C are the norm, and even January manages more sunshine than much of northern Europe sees in spring. What rain there is falls almost entirely between November and February, in short-lived Atlantic spells. Sea-lovers get the best of it in late summer, when the water off Faro reaches its warmest after months of sunshine.

When is the sea warmest in Faro?

In August and September, after the whole summer has warmed it, when the water off the eastern Algarve typically reaches around 18–19 °C. Early summer is noticeably cooler, as the ocean lags the air by a couple of months.

Does it rain in the Algarve in summer?

Almost never. June to September are close to completely dry in a typical year, which is why the region can promise sunshine with unusual confidence.

Is Faro warm enough to visit in winter?

Yes: winter days are usually sunny and around 16–17 °C, pleasant for walking, cycling and golf. It's not beach weather, but it's the mildest winter on the mainland.
