Monte Gordo is at the eastern end of the Algarve, close to the Guadiana river and the Spanish border at Vila Real de Santo António. A belt of pine woods runs behind an unusually wide beach, and the town itself is low-rise with a casino and a long promenade. It is a favourite with Portuguese and Spanish holidaymakers, which gives August a different flavour to the resorts further west.
This is the warmest, driest corner of mainland Portugal, with summer afternoons of 29–31 °C and winter days around 16–17 °C. Rain is rare and squeezed into short winter spells. The sea here is shallow, south-facing and well sheltered from the northerly wind, so it warms more than anywhere else on the mainland and reaches about 21–23 °C at the end of summer.

In August and September, when the water reaches roughly 21–23 °C. That is the warmest sea on the Portuguese mainland: the shallow, sheltered shelf here heats through the summer without the upwelling that cools the west. Even in winter it usually holds 15–16 °C.
Quieter, flatter and noticeably warmer in the water. There are no cliffs or coves here, just a very wide sandy beach backed by pines, and the crowd is mostly Portuguese and Spanish rather than international. Prices tend to be lower than around Albufeira or Lagos.
Very. Vila Real de Santo António is a few minutes away, and a passenger ferry crosses the Guadiana from there to Ayamonte in about fifteen minutes. By road, the bridge upriver makes it a short drive. Remember that Spain runs one hour ahead of Portugal.
