Coimbra's climate sits halfway between Porto's Atlantic north and the hotter south, with one important difference: the city lies inland, in the Mondego valley, out of reach of the coastal sea breeze. Summer afternoons therefore run several degrees hotter than on the coast and pass 35 °C with some regularity during heat spells, while nights cool off quickly as fresh air drains down the valley.
The valley also explains Coimbra's trademark morning fog, which can blanket the river in the early hours even in summer before burning off into a clear day. Rain is concentrated from October to February, more than Lisbon receives and less than Porto, and winter days are mild, typically 13–15 °C, with frost confined to a handful of calm, clear nights each year.

Because it sits inland, in the Mondego valley, beyond the reach of the Atlantic breeze that cools the coast every afternoon. Under the same summer sun, the valley air simply keeps heating up.
Mostly on calm, clear nights when cool air settles in the Mondego valley. It is common in autumn and winter, possible even on summer mornings, and usually lifts by mid-morning.
Mild and fairly wet: daytime temperatures around 13–15 °C, most of the year's rain, and only the occasional light frost on the coldest clear nights.
