Zambujeira do Mar is a small village on the Costa Vicentina, sitting on top of the cliffs with its beach directly below, reached by a flight of steps. There is little to it beyond a handful of streets, a church looking out to sea and a few restaurants, and that is the appeal. Every August a large music festival takes over the village and the fields around it.
Summers are warm rather than hot on this coast, generally 24–27 °C, and the afternoon northerly is a fixture. Winter is mild at 15–16 °C with Atlantic rain. The beach faces west and is wide open to the ocean, so upwelling holds the water at about 16–18 °C through the summer and the swell can be substantial. The cliffs put the sand in shade late in the afternoon.

Busy. The music festival brings tens of thousands of people to a village of a few hundred, and accommodation for miles around books out well in advance. Outside that week Zambujeira stays quiet even in high summer, and in spring the clifftops are covered in flowers.
