Matosinhos is Porto's city beach: a wide stretch of sand pressed against the city, reached by metro, with the Leixões harbour closing off the north end. The breakwater takes the sting out of the swell and leaves small, regular waves most of the year, which is why half a dozen surf schools work here side by side, between bathers and the fish grills across the avenue.

The climate is the Atlantic northwest: summers of 20–25 °C where mornings often start grey and clear by the afternoon, and mild winters of 13–15 °C with generous spells of rain. The sea is the most serious in the country: upwelling is strongest on this coast and the water rarely leaves 15–17 °C, whatever the heat on land.

When is the sea warmest in Matosinhos?

In August and September, when the water touches 16–18 °C. This is Portugal's coldest coast: persistent upwelling brings deep water up all summer, and a hot day in Porto changes nothing in the water.

Why does Matosinhos have so many surf schools?

Because the Leixões breakwater shelters the north corner of the beach and filters the swell, leaving small, predictable waves most days. Add the metro ride from Porto and the result is the north's biggest surf classroom.

Why is the water so cold even in summer?

Because of coastal upwelling, which is most intense in the north. The northerly wind pushes surface water offshore and the ocean replaces it with cold water from the depths, so July and August can have a colder sea than April.
