Quarteira sits in the central Algarve, a working fishing town that grew into a resort without losing its boats. A long promenade runs the length of a wide, south-facing beach, the fish market opens every morning, and the marina of Vilamoura is a walk along the sand to the west. It is an unpretentious, good-value base with everything within reach on foot.

Summer is hot and dry, with afternoons around 28–30 °C and warm evenings that keep the promenade busy until late. Winter is mild at 16–17 °C and mostly sunny, with rain limited to short spells. The beach faces south and is sheltered from the northerly wind that batters the west coast, so the sea is calm on most days and climbs to 18–19 °C by late summer.

When is the sea warmest in Quarteira?

From August into early October. The water peaks well after the hottest weather on land, reaching 18–19 °C in late summer, so September is usually a better bet than June. In winter it settles at about 15–16 °C.

Is Quarteira good for families?

Yes. The beach is wide, the slope into the water is gentle and the sea is usually flat, so small children can paddle safely. Lifeguards work the central stretch through the season, and the promenade behind means cafés, shade and toilets are never far from your towel.

How do you get to Quarteira?

It is about 25 minutes by car from Faro airport, and buses run from Faro and Albufeira through the day. Loulé, on the Algarve railway line, is the nearest station and a short taxi ride away. Once there, you can walk to Vilamoura along the beach in under an hour.
