Vilamoura grew up around one of Europe's largest marinas, in the central Algarve between Quarteira and the red cliffs of Praia da Falésia. Facing south and out of reach of the northerly wind, it collects everything the Algarve is famous for: dry summers at 28–30 °C, a late-afternoon sea breeze and a sea that stays typically calm from early summer well into autumn.
Winter is among the mildest in continental Europe, with highs of 16–18 °C and enough sun to keep the golf courses busy all year round. Rain is concentrated between November and February and rarely lasts for days on end. The sea follows the rest of the central Algarve: fresh in June, it climbs to 18–19 °C by late August and September.

Yes, it is a nearly unbroken stretch of sand running for several kilometres below the cliffs, shelving gently into a usually calm sea. On days with southerly or easterly wind the swell picks up, but those are the exception in summer.
Winter is precisely the golf high season. With highs of 16–18 °C, plenty of clear days and courses minutes from the marina, the Algarve winter is one of the few in Europe where you can play comfortably all year.
