Olhão is a Ria Formosa town of flat white rooftops and cube-shaped houses, with the largest fish market in the Algarve on its waterfront. It is a working place rather than a resort, and it has no ocean beach of its own: the sand lies out on the barrier islands, and ferries run from the quay to Armona and Culatra through the day. In between is a national park of channels, sandbanks and salt pans.

Summers are hot and dry at 28–30 °C, cooled a little by the breeze off the lagoon, and winters are mild at 16–17 °C with long sunny spells. The water in the Ria Formosa is shallow and sheltered, so it warms fast over the sandbanks and is among the mildest in the country, while the ocean side of the islands sits at about 18–19 °C in late summer.

When is the sea warmest in Olhão?

August and September, when the ocean side of the islands reaches around 18–19 °C. The lagoon channels can feel warmer still on a sunny afternoon, particularly as the tide floods in over sandflats that have been baking all day.

How do you get to the beach from Olhão?

By ferry. Boats leave the quay next to the markets for Armona and Culatra, and the crossing takes fifteen to thirty minutes depending on the island. Check the last return before you go, since the timetable thins out early and changes with the season.

What is Olhão known for?

Its fish market, the biggest in the Algarve, housed with the produce market in a pair of red-brick halls on the waterfront. The old quarter behind it has the cubist rooftops that give the town its look, and the Ria Formosa on its doorstep is one of the best birdwatching areas in the country.
