Sagres is the last village on mainland Europe, out on the southwestern corner of the Algarve beside Cabo de São Vicente, with Henry the Navigator's fortress spread across the headland. Two coasts meet at this point, which is why there is always a beach out of the wind: Mareta and Martinhal face south, Tonel and Beliche face west into the Atlantic. The place feels stripped back and windswept rather than resort-like, and it draws surfers, windsurfers and walkers more than sunbed crowds.
Summers are warm rather than hot for the Algarve, usually 24–27 °C, because the wind off the ocean almost never stops. Winter is mild at 15–16 °C, with the rain arriving in Atlantic spells between November and February. The sea is the surprise: upwelling around the cape pulls cold water to the surface, so Sagres sits at 17–19 °C in summer while beaches an hour east are two or three degrees warmer.

In September and early October, once the summer wind eases and the upwelling at Cabo de São Vicente relaxes. Even at the peak the water holds around 17–19 °C, cooler than the rest of the Algarve. The south-facing beaches, Mareta and Martinhal, usually feel a degree warmer than Tonel and Beliche.
Follow the coast that is out of the wind. With the usual northerly, Mareta and Martinhal are sheltered and calm while Tonel and Beliche take the full Atlantic. When the wind turns southerly the pattern reverses. All four are within a few minutes of the village, so it costs nothing to change your mind.
It is one of the best bases in the Algarve, precisely because of the two coasts. West-facing Tonel and Beliche pick up Atlantic swell all year, and the sheltered south side gives calmer options for beginners and for windsurfing. A wetsuit is sensible here in every season.
