Comporta sits on the Tróia sand spit in the Setúbal district, with rice paddies and umbrella pines behind it and a long line of ocean sand in front. The village is small and deliberately low key, and the beaches either side of it stay close to empty for most of the year despite being little over an hour from Lisbon. There is nothing on the horizon but dune.
Summers run to 26–29 °C, hotter than the exposed coast further north because the land behind holds the heat, with a breeze off the sea most afternoons. Winter is mild at 15–16 °C. The beaches face the open Atlantic, so the sea is cool and lively, sitting at about 17–19 °C through summer and reaching its best in September.

September, when it edges up to around 18–19 °C after the summer wind drops away. Through July and August upwelling keeps the ocean here in the 17–19 °C range, which is refreshing rather than warm on a hot day.
Quiet and unbuilt. There are no high-rise resorts, just dune, pine and rice fields with a handful of beach restaurants, and the sand runs for kilometres in both directions. It has become fashionable in recent years, which shows in the prices rather than in the crowds.
The space is unbeatable and the sand is soft and clean, but the water is open Atlantic with waves and currents, so keep young swimmers close and near the lifeguards. For calm water, the estuary beaches on the Tróia side of the peninsula are the better option on a rough day.
