Carcavelos is the largest beach on the Estoril coast and Lisbon's easiest escape to the sea, about twenty minutes by train from the city. The São Julião da Barra fort sits at the western end, and a wide arc of sand runs east from it. This is the surf classroom of the Lisbon area, with schools lined up along the beach and a crowd that arrives in force on summer weekends.

Summers are warm but tempered by the ocean, generally 24–27 °C, with a northwesterly breeze in the afternoon. Winter is mild at 14–15 °C, with rain in Atlantic spells. The water is properly Atlantic and upwelling keeps it around 16–18 °C in summer, several degrees below the Algarve and quick to drop when the wind swings north.

When is the sea warmest in Carcavelos?

In September and October, when it reaches about 17–19 °C. The peak comes late here because summer upwelling keeps replacing the surface water. In winter it settles near 14–15 °C, so wetsuits are the norm outside high summer.

How do you get to Carcavelos from Lisbon?

Take the Cascais line train from Cais do Sodré and get off at Carcavelos, then walk about fifteen minutes down to the sand. The whole trip takes around half an hour and trains run frequently until late. Driving is possible, but parking near the beach is difficult on summer weekends.

Is Carcavelos good for learning to surf?

It is where most of Lisbon learns. The beach is long and sandy with consistent, manageable waves, and surf schools hire out boards and wetsuits all along it. The trade-off is the crowd: in summer the line-up is busy, so weekday mornings are far more pleasant.
