Bragança has the most continental climate in Portugal. Tucked into the far northeast at around 700 m of altitude, with ranges of mountains cutting it off from the Atlantic, it gets the coldest winters of any district capital: sub-zero nights are routine from December to February, frost is a near-daily companion, and snow settles on the city a few days most winters.

Summer swings the other way. Afternoons regularly reach 30 °C and pass 35 °C in hot spells, yet the dry mountain air lets nights drop back to a cool 12–15 °C. The old Trás-os-Montes saying about nine months of winter and three months of hell exaggerates only slightly: the yearly range here is the widest in the country.

Does it snow in Bragança?

Yes, most winters bring a few days of settling snow in the city, and the Montesinho hills just north see considerably more. It is the snowiest district capital in Portugal, though falls are measured in days per year, not months.

How cold are winter nights in Bragança?

Below freezing on a regular basis from December to February, and cold snaps can push minima to -5 °C or lower. Clear, calm nights on the plateau are the coldest ones.

Are summers in Bragança hot?

The afternoons are, at 30–35 °C during dry spells, but the nights are the difference from the south: the air at 700 m cools fast after sunset, so mornings start fresh even in August.
