Funchal is often called the city of eternal spring, and the numbers back it up: sheltered on Madeira's sunny south coast, its temperatures move in a remarkably narrow band, from daytime highs of about 19–20 °C in midwinter to around 26 °C in late summer. The surrounding ocean is the great stabiliser, and it also keeps the sea swimmable for a long season, at its warmest in September.

Madeira is an island of microclimates: the mountains behind the city catch cloud and rain that Funchal itself often escapes, so the weather can differ street by altitude. What rain the city does get falls mostly between October and March. Summer on the south coast is dry and reliably bright, though a bank of cloud on the peaks, known locally as the capacete, is a familiar afternoon sight.
