Ericeira is a fishing town perched on the cliffs of the west coast, less than an hour from Lisbon, and Europe's first World Surfing Reserve. Along a few kilometres of coast, world-class waves line up from Ribeira d'Ilhas to Coxos, fed by Atlantic swell that almost never switches off.
The climate is the west coast in its purest form: summers cool by Portuguese standards at 22–25 °C, a northerly wind most afternoons, and mornings that sometimes start grey before opening into sunny afternoons. Winter is mild at 14–15 °C, with rain in Atlantic spells. The sea means business: coastal upwelling holds the water at 16–18 °C even in August.

It was designated in 2011, the first in Europe, for packing seven world-class waves into about 4 km of coast, over bottoms ranging from sand to rock slab. The consistency of the Atlantic swell and the orientation of the coast deliver surfable waves nearly all year.
The morning. The typical summer northerly picks up after lunch and tears up the conditions, so surfers and swimmers make the most of the early hours, when the sea is smoothest and the wind light.
