Figueira da Foz stands at the mouth of the Mondego river, halfway up the Portuguese coast, with one of the widest urban beaches in Europe in front of it. The walk from the promenade to the water takes several minutes across open sand, and boardwalks are laid to make it easier. The town has a casino, a working port and a well-known surf break at Cabedelo, across the river.

Summers are warm at 24–27 °C but genuinely windy, with the northerly building through the afternoon and driving sand along the beach. Winter is mild at 13–15 °C with Atlantic rain. The sea is open and cool, around 16–18 °C in summer, and the river mouth adds current, so the safest swimming is on the main beach near the lifeguards.

When is the sea warmest in Figueira da Foz?

In September, when the water reaches around 17–19 °C as the summer wind starts to ease. Through July and August upwelling holds it at about 16–18 °C, cool enough that most people swim in short bursts rather than long ones.

Why is the beach at Figueira da Foz so wide?

The harbour works at the mouth of the Mondego trapped sand moving down the coast and piled it up in front of the town, and the beach kept growing. The result is a walk of several hundred metres from the promenade to the sea. Windbreaks are part of the local kit and boardwalks cross the sand.

Is Figueira da Foz good for surfing?

Cabedelo, on the south side of the river mouth, is one of the better-known left-handers on this coast and works with the prevailing swell. Schools operate there in season. The town beach itself is not a surf beach, being wide, shallow and often blown out by the afternoon.
